Elijah Ran for His Life

What would cause the prophet Elijah to be afraid enough to run for his life from Queen Jezebel right after calling down fire from heaven and killing 450 prophets of Baal? (I Kings 19:2,3) He of all people should have known God's power and been confident in God's ability to deliver him from her. We all need to think about what led to this, because it can happen to any of us.

After the Mount Carmel victory, Elijah actually outran the chariot of King Ahab back to Samaria. Not long after his arrival, Jezebel made her threat against his life. I believe Elijah was totally worn out and fatigued from the adrenalin rush of the fire and the run of over 20 miles. When we become physically worn down for any reason, it is easy to become depressed, and when we are depressed, we are naturally more negative and fearful. Therefore, I believe there is good reason to believe that Elijah ran for his life because of depression, even though he had just seen a great miracle.

This is a huge warning for all of us as believers, and it should be a great incentive to get our rest and stay in good shape. Those two things will help us to spiritually stay close to the Lord and away from the fear of people.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 21-22 and II Kings 1.
