Observing the Sabbath

Work was ordained by God, and it is good for all people. God worked for 6 days to create the universe. His work was very good, and it is a model for us. However, rest and worship are also ordained by God and essential for physical and spiritual growth. That is why God set apart the seventh day for all of us to rest from work and focus on Him in worship. It is a holy day. (Exodus 31:14) How are we doing in observing the Sabbath? We can tell it is very important by what God says here and in other passages of His Word.

When something is holy, it is set apart or different from the rest. A thing is holy or a day is holy when it is not tainted by sin or sinful practices, but also when it is filled with the righteous things and practices. Therefore, the Sabbath is a time of rest, because that is what God ordained it to accomplish. However, it is not empty rest or shallow rest. It is to be used to do the right things and to stay away from the wrong things. One of the best things we can do is to worship the Lord, and we truly find rest when we rest in Him by spending time with Him, recharging our souls for the week ahead.

It we do not rest, we will not be healthy physically, because God made us with the need for rest. If we do not set aside a day for rest and worship, we will not grow spiritually, because we will be disobedient to God's commands and His order for our lives. I urge each of us to observe the Sabbath from a faithful heart, and see how God blesses us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 32-34.
