Obeying God Rather Than Men

Peter and the other apostles stood up to the Jewish leaders, and they made a well known statement, "We ought to obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29) Of course, that applies just as much today, as it did then. However, are we, as believers, ready to obey God rather than men? That is the question before us on this election day.

We know that government is ordained by God to keep the peace and establish order in our society. (Romans 13) Therefore, believers are to follow the dictates of the governing officials, with one notable exception. If the government requires us to break God's laws, or if the government tells us we cannot do what God has commanded us to do, we must obey God rather than men. It is the order God has established. He is sovereign. We are the people of His kingdom, and not of this world. Therefore, we obey Him, when He tells us to do good, and we disobey anyone who tells us not to do good. We do not obey anyone, who commands us to do what is evil, but we obey God, who has called us to be holy. It is really very simple. Obey God rather than men, if there is a conflict between the two.

We do not know what this election will hold for us as believers. However, we should be prepared to stand up as witnesses for Jesus Christ, no matter what the government says, just like Peter and the other apostles were doing in Acts 5. Also, we must not commit sins by disobeying God, because the government requires us to do those things. Either may lead to imprisonment,  but that is a small price to pay, after all that Jesus endured for us. Please, join me in praying that God will work miracles in this election to bring about His will and bring our country back closer to where we should be.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Acts 6-8.
