Thus Far the Lord has Helped Us
Samuel was praying for Israel to defeat the Philistines who were coming against them. God actually won the battle for Israel by thundering so loudly that the Philistines were scared and ran away. Therefore, the Israelites pushed them back passed the town of Mizpah. It was a huge victory in which God helped them take much territory from their enemies. That is why Samuel put up a stone to remember how far the Lord had helped them come. He called it "Ebenezer, which means "thus far or this far the Lord has helped us." (I Samuel 7:12) How far has God brought you against your opponents and challenges in your life?
If any of us gets anywhere in life that is worthwhile, it is because of the help of the Lord. We should always honor Him, and give Him credit for helping us. One way is to make a memorial, so that you do not forget what God has done. Also, a memorial continually gives us another reason to praise the Lord, which is good for us and our relationship with God. Please, do not be guilty of failing to thank God for the victories of life, and do not become proud thinking that you did it on your own. Give God all of the glory and watch how far He takes you.
