All That The Lord Has Said We Will Do
The Israelites finally understood what the Lord wanted them to do, when they heard Moses read the Book of the Covenant. He wanted their obedience to all of it, so they made that commitment before God and all of the people. (Exodus 24:7) That is what all of us need to do every day.
The Book of the Covenant contained all of the commands that God had shown Moses. A covenant is an agreement between two people or groups. The covenant usually has something for each party to do, and if they do those things, the covenant remains in effect. However, if one party breaks the covenant, there are serious consequences.
Our part of the New Covenant is to trust Christ as our Lord and Savior. When we do, we are saved from our sins by God's grace. However, that is not the end of the covenant agreement. We are to continue to love Him and trust Him. The Bible makes it clear that if we love the Lord, we will keep His commandments. (I John 5:3) Also, the nature of trust is to obey the Lord, since He is Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Why would we not do all that He says to us? Therefore, if we do God's will after we are saved, we grow closer and closer to the Lord. If we fail to obey, He has to punish us, and we drift away from Him. We do not loose our salvation, but we do not enjoy the benefits of the covenant as we should.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 28-30.
