Jesus, the Eternal Lord
Most people know that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, as foretold by Micah, the prophet.(Micah 5:2) This prophecy is well known, being read often at Christmas. However, how many people pay attention to the end of the verse? Please, don't miss this very important part of the prophecy.
Yes, Jesus was born a baby in the stable in Bethlehem. He was laid in a manger, and the shepherds found Mary, Joseph, and the baby there, just as the angels told them. We might get so comfortable with this account of the birth of Jesus that we forget Jesus did not begin to exist at that moment. Jesus is eternal God. This verse tells us He was the One "whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting." Some 700 years before the birth of Jesus, Micah reveals that this baby is the eternal God coming down to earth, so that He could take on human flesh, and die for the sins of the world. Many people miss that part completely.
Please, remember that if Jesus was not God, He could not die for us. His blood being shed would not atone for our sins. To be our Savior, the Lord of All had to become a man, too. Therefore, He was 100% God and 100% man, except that He did not have a sinful nature because of the virgin birth. God thought of the perfect, in fact, the only way to pay the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the whole world by coming in human flesh. Praise God for our Eternal Lord Jesus Christ, who became our Savior through His death and resurrection.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Micah 6-7 and Nahum 1-2.
