Purity of Speech

Job had the right commitment to the Lord about how he would speak. His decision was that he would not speak wickedness or utter deceit as long as he had breath.(Job 27:3,4) That is a fantastic way to live.

We sin with our words so often. The tongue is impossible for a person to tame, but with God's help, all things are possible. The first step to getting God's help to tame the tongue is to make the same commitment that Job made. We must decide never to allow unwholesome, wicked speech to come out of our mouth or to say anything that is not completely true. Then, God can take us from there, and give us the power to uphold our commitment.

Think about this. If you really were serious, you could decide not to speak at all for 24 hours. Yes, it would be a challenge, but you could do it, especially with God's help. If you can control your speech in that way, you can stop before saying anything wrong, and say the right thing or say nothing. It may be that if you have tried this and failed, it is a sign of a larger problem of the heart. The Lord told us that what is in the heart comes out of the mouth. Therefore, you might need to ask God to clean out your heart first, and then make this commitment. Either way, it is very possible to do just what Job decided he would do.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 28-31.
