Job's Definition of Wisdom and Understanding
Job was a wise man, and he had a great deal of understanding, too. In fact, he gave a definition of both that is helpful for all of us.(Job 28:28) Sounds a lot like the wisest man who ever lived, doesn't it?
Wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Of course, the word fear does not mean being afraid of God, but it means respecting God and standing in awe of His power to the point that we do not want to experience His anger. So, why is that wisdom? Wisdom comes from God. If we always seek God's way of doing things out of total respect for Him, we will do the wise thing. In other words, if we never do things our way, because we would fear what would happen to us, then, we will always do what He would want us to do.
Understanding is to depart from evil. That shows us that we are always lacking understanding, if we can justify doing the wrong thing. We have no understanding if we choose to sin, thinking it is the best course of action. After all sin brings destruction and death. Once we realize that and act on that truth, so that we always seek to be righteous, we have understanding.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 32-35.
