Preparing to Hear God Speak
Eli's instructions to young Samuel were excellent. He showed the boy how to be prepared to hear what God was trying to say to him.(I Samuel 3:9) I believe these directions will help anyone who wants to hear from the Lord.
To hear from God we have to be physically and spiritually prepared. Physically, we need to be still, so we can listen. It helps to be in a quiet place, too, most of the time. God can speak to us at any time and any place. The key factor is our hearing. If we are busy, loud, and doing other things, we can miss what He is saying. In the quiet places we can focus in on His voice. Then, when we are out in the highways of life, we can hear Him better, because we know His voice well.
We must have a servant's heart to hear all God is saying. He is not our servant to tell us what we want to hear. We are His servants, so we must be ready to do whatever He says. Why should God speak to us, if He knows we are not going to obey? Yes, He does speak at times, when He knows we will reject what He says. I know that. However, many times He speaks to those surrendered to Him first and foremost. It is about having the right relationship with the Master. Our submission shows we know He is Lord, and we are willing to do what He says.
Let's practice being quiet and submitted to the Lord. Then, we can see what He says to us. "Speak, Lord, Your servant hears."
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 7-9.
