Keeping Our Commitments

On several occasions David and Jonathan made a covenant with each other, and it even extended to future generations.(I Samuel 20:42) It would have been easy for David to forget about this covenant once Jonathan was dead, and David was king, but he didn't. David fulfilled his commitment by finding Jonathan's lame son, Mephibosheth, and bringing him into his palace to live like one of his own sons.(II Samuel 9:7) This showed David's character, and his desire to fulfill his promises.

If we are not careful, we will keep the commitments we make that are easy, and the ones that benefit us, but we will forget about the hard ones that cost us something. This is not good. It is the opposite of the character of our Lord Jesus Christ. He left Heaven to come to earth to live a sinless life, so He could die for us to provide our salvation. He was committed to doing the will of the Father, no matter what it cost Him. He did not give up because of the pain or because most of the people rejected Him. He kept His commitment and went all the way to the Cross. We need to have that same type of integrity to fulfill our commitments as fully as possible.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 11-13.
