The Day of Atonement

One of the commandments in the Old Testament Law was that the High Priest would enter the Holy Place once a year to make atonement for all of the sins of the people.(Leviticus 16:34) He did this by sprinkling blood on the mercy seat of the ark. It was the most solemn day of the year, and all of the people were to be confessing their sins and repenting. This Day of Atonement pointed us to the great Day of Atonement when Jesus, the High Priest, made atonement for all of the sins of the world once and for all on the Cross by shedding His blood for our sins. He only had to do it once for all. It was THE Day of Atonement for everyone.

In the Old Testament times Aaron had to enter the Holy Place through the veil. When Jesus died the veil in the Temple was torn in two pieces from top to bottom, showing all of us that access to God and atonement for sins was open for all to receive by trusting Christ as Lord of all. After that, there was no longer a need for the yearly day of atonement according to the law. Our salvation through Christ gives us at-one-ment with God forever. It is because of the sacrifice of Jesus and our faith in Him as Lord, not anything we could ever do.

I pray that we all can celebrate THE Day of Atonement as a part of our lives, and we know that we have been forgiven our sins, and we are clean before the Lord, so we have access to Him forever. If you have never done that, today can be the day of atonement for your sins by trusting Christ personally to be your Lord.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 17-19.
