Speaking Thoughtlessly
These verses hit me when I read them.(Leviticus 5:4,5) I believe they are addressing the sin of speaking thoughtlessly. Read them closely, and see if you agree. If that is true, we all need to be very careful about what we say.
Many times, we make pronouncements about what we will do or about something that is important to us. We might call it "swearing" or using an "oath." These verses show us that whether we are talking about doing good or evil, there is a danger to sin by speaking thoughtlessly. We do not mean what we say. We do not really think about it first. We make a rash statement, and we find out later that we should not have said it. It is a sin, even if we had good intentions. We need to realize our sin and confess it. That means to admit our thoughtless speech to those who heard it and ask forgiveness from them and from the Lord.
Sometimes, I believe we realize we have spoken thoughtlessly, but we pass it off as not being important. It is important to God and to other people. We must be careful to think before we speak, and to say only what we really mean. If we fail to do this, we must honestly admit that we sinned. This helps the Lord know we are repenting of our sin, and it helps others see how serious it is, so they will do the same thing.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 6-8.
