Seeking God and Removing Idols

When did you begin to seek the Lord? I am not asking when you started going to church or reading your Bible. When was it your aim to connect with God and to find out His purpose for life. King Josiah started seeking God at age 16.(II Chronicles 34:1,3) Evidently, he sought the Lord with a sincere heart, because it was just four years later that he began remove the idols from the land. What is the connection between these two things? Let me explain.

This week I met a very good Bible teacher at the Bible-Storying Conference. His name is John Witte. He taught us something today that Josiah found when he sought the Lord. We will either worship and serve God, or we will worship and serve gods, but we can't do both. It is a confirmation of what the Lord has been showing me lately. The main question for us is, "Will we surrender to Jesus as Lord?" The truth is that when we seek to know Him, we will find that God is the Sovereign, Ruler of the universe. He is Lord of all. Since Jesus is God, He is Lord of all. If we do not know Him, as He is, we will worship gods, instead. A god is anything you think you can't live without. God gives life, while gods rob us of life by stealing our time and energy. No one will ever have the life God designed for us by worshiping gods. Therefore, to have the best life possible, we must put God first, remove the idols in our lives, and walk with God alone. That is what Josiah led the people of God to do in his day, and that is still what we need to do today.

Seek the Lord earnestly, and ask Him to show you any idols. Then, remove them, and put all of your confidence in God, instead of other gods.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ezra 2-5.
