When Strength Brings Destruction

Most people like strength. We tend to think that weakness is bad, and strength is good. Is that a fair statement? I have seen that in our American culture most of the time. However, when we are strong, we are tempted to trust ourselves instead of the Lord, and that kind of strength leads to our destruction, like it did for King Uzziah.(II Chronicles 26:16) We all need an understanding of strength.

Strength is relative. No matter how strong you get in any way there is going to be someone in the world who is stronger than you at some point. However, God's strength is complete. He is All-Powerful. He is so much stronger than any human or any force in the universe that there is no comparison. His weakness (if He had any) would be far greater than any strength a human being ever had. Get the picture. Therefore, no human is really strong when compared to God. We must gauge our strength by His strength, not by other people. The reason for that is that if we get proud, because of our strength, He can chop us down in a second. Then, we will be completely weak.

On the other hand, if we realize that all of us are weak compared to God, and we submit to Him, He can give us His super-natural strength to do His will, and we will be very strong. That is the only way for any human to be really strong. We must have His strength. We can only get His strength when we humbly admit that we can do nothing without Him, and we depend on Him totally. Paul found that out, so that he rejoiced in his weaknesses.(II Corinthians 12:9) Watch out when you think you are strong. Your destruction is around the corner. Watch when you humble yourself under His mighty right hand, and see how strong you can really be.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 28-30.
