Sin's Slippery Slope

The people decided to sin by worshiping other gods after Joshua and his elders died. God would send judges to bring them back to Him, but after the judge died, they reverted back to their sin.(Judges 2:19) In fact, each generation sinned more than the previous one. That is sin's slippery slope. No individual or group of people can decide to just sin a little. Sin always gets worse and worse, and it leads us farther and farther from the Lord.

Think of it like riding a roller coaster. The first ride is extremely exciting, even scary. The second ride loses some of the fear, but the excitement wanes some, too. Then, you have to ride with no hands to get the same feeling. Later, you don't get much of a thrill at all, so you have to find a faster, higher roller coaster to get the same effects. The progression goes on and on in search of the greatest pleasure possible. Every type of sin starts out like that, and we slide down the slope of greater and greater disobedience to God to get our fix.

Sin's slippery slope is one of the reasons we must hate all sin and do whatever we can to allow God to give us the power to eliminate it all from our lives. We must get our pleasure from our relationship with the Lord and from doing His will. Then, we will have real joy, peace, and contentment, instead of the world's happiness and cheap thrills. We must get off of sin's slippery slope and climb closer and closer to the Lord for a life that really satisfies.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Judges 3-5.
