Servants and Stewards

How would you describe what a Christian is supposed to do with his or her life? Paul sums it up well in I Corinthians 4:1,2. We are all servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. If we do not know what we are to be doing, we surely won't accomplish what we are to accomplish in life.

Jesus is Lord. We are the servants. We do what He directs us to do by His Holy Spirit and His Word. Therefore, it is essential for us to remain filled with the Spirit and to continuously feed on His Word, so we know what to do and how to do it. We can't just go with the flow like non-believers. We have to stay focused on God's ways, not the ways of this world.

We know the mysteries of God, since we heard the gospel and we have the Spirit. A mystery is something that was a secret, but now it has been revealed. God has revealed that Jesus is the Lord of all, who died to set everyone free from sin, and to give eternal, abundant life to those who turn from their sins and trust Him, as Lord. Now that we have the mystery revealed to us, we are stewards of that message. We are required by God to be faithful in how we handle the gospel. We are not to keep it to ourselves. That defeats the purpose. We are to share it with everyone, using every means possible.

It is like having a financial manager in charge of our savings and retirement. What is that person supposed to do? Do they simply put the money in the bank and save it? Of course, they do not just save it. They invest it wisely, so that we earn more money. That is being a good, faithful steward, and we must do the same with the gospel.

In the end every believer will give an account of how we have served Christ and for our stewardship of the gospel. We must strive to be faithful servants and stewards each day the Lord gives us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Corinthians 5-7.
