Watch and Pray

As much as we may want to obey the Lord, we will fail, if we are not diligent to "watch and pray."(Mark 14:38) Jesus made sure that Peter, James, and John realized this truth, when they were in the garden of Gethsemane praying before the crucifixion. Jesus asked them to watch and pray, but three times they fell asleep. The result of their lack of prayer and watching was that they all deserted Jesus when the soldiers arrived to arrest Jesus. Later, Peter even denied Christ three times. I am sure they wanted to support the Lord Jesus, but their flesh was too weak, and the Spirit was not in control.

Satan is very smart. He is constantly working to throw us off, so that we don't obey God and receive His blessings. If we are not on constant look out for his working, we will fall for his tricks. Also, prayer is essential. We are filled with the Spirit, when we pray. We confess any sins which the Spirit brings to our minds. Then, we humbly submit ourselves to His control. Then, we are empowered and directed by the Spirit instead of our flesh. It is at that point that the weakness of our flesh is overcome, so that our willing Spirit can give us victory over any temptation thrown at us. See what I mean. We must watch and pray without ceasing.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Mark 16 and Luke 1-2.
