Our Unchanging God

It is a very good thing for us that the Lord does not change. If He did change, we would have been in danger of being consumed by Him.(Malachi 3:6) That is what He told the prophet, Malachi, to tell the Jewish people, when He was very angry with His people.

People change when they get angry. They cease to be loving, merciful, and kind to others. Almost every morning when I read the headlines, I see another murder that has been committed, and often it has been done in anger. People change, but God never changes. He had every reason to be angry with His people. They were forsaking their relationship with Him to follow idols. The men were divorcing their wives. They were robbing Him of tithes and offerings. God could have wiped them all out for their sins, but He did not do that, since He is always faithful, merciful, loving, and kind, even when He is very angry.

When we become like Jesus, we will be much more consistent in our attitudes and in how we act. Knowing Christ and becoming mature in Him leads us to use the mind of Christ that is in us once we are saved, so that we can know what He would do and do it. Consistently doing God's will in His way is the sign of a mature believer. It is not about emotions or what we say. It is all about unchanging obedience to the Lord.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 1-3.
