Mustard Seed Faith
Many people misunderstand faith, so Jesus told a brief parable to help us.(Matthew 17:20) When the disciples could not cast the demon out of a young boy at his father's request, Jesus explained the reason. It was not that their faith was too small. It was that they did not believe. It was unbelief. He explained faith by using the illustration of a mustard seed.
A mustard seed is the smallest seed. It is not big, but it is real. Faith does not have to be huge, like some people tell us, but it has to be genuine trust. It has to be faith in the right thing. Mustard seed faith is genuine faith in God, who is able to do anything. We exercise mustard seed faith when we believe God wants to move a mountain from here to there, and we believe He can do it. Then, we are able to see anything done.
If we make faith seeing our own desires done, we are trusting ourselves to know what is right or to set the direction for the future. That is not faith in anything but ourselves, and we are not able to do any of those things.
Mustard seed faith comes from walking with God, so we can know His voice, and believe what He is telling us to do.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 18-20.
