Our Kinsman Redeemer

The book of Ruth contains a beautiful love story. Ruth's love for Naomi is very touching. Then, her marriage to Boaz is the storybook ending to a very difficult life. However, the main theme of the book is even more important. Boaz was a picture of Jesus. He was the close relative, or the kinsman redeemer, for Naomi and Ruth.(Ruth 4:14) This truth is amazing!

In the Old Testament God established a way that a widow would not be childless and the family name would be continued. Also, He provided a way for the land to stay in the family, when a member of the family died. It is called the "kinsman redeemer." The closest relative had the option to buy the land and to take the widow to be his wife, so she could have a child to carry on the family. That is why Boaz did what he did to take Ruth as His wife. He delivered both Ruth and Naomi out of poverty, and the son that was born to them, Obed, became the grandfather of king David. Isn't that amazing?

Now, think of the Lord Jesus. He came to earth and became our kinsman, so He could redeem us by paying the price of His blood on the cross. He saved us from the poverty of sin, and He gave us life eternal in heaven. Jesus is our kinsman redeemer. We should love Him and thank Him for what He did for us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 1-3.
