Spiritual Family
This week has been a very unusual week for Georgia. School has been cancelled for four days in a row because of the snow, ice, and bitter cold weather we have had since Sunday. That could be the longest stretch of snow days since the ice storm in 1973, which happened right after I met Chris. We did not have power for 3 days and school was out for a week. I believe it started on a Sunday night, too.
Monday evening we were marveling at the amount of snow and ice everywhere. We were not sure when we would be able to get out and drive anywhere. Then, we received a call from Evelyn saying that her husband was dying. She had spoken to the hospice nurse, who lives more than 30 miles away, and she could not come to help, but she was pretty sure from the signs that Walter would not live very long. Chris asked me if we could go to be with her. She was alone with her 8 year old daughter and no other family in the area. I told her that I honestly did not think we could get there, but we could try. We made it to her street, but she lives at the bottom of a hill. When I put on the Buick's brakes, we slid gently into her mailbox, and we were not able to move more than 10 feet after that. We went inside and prayed with her and Walter, even though he could not hear the words. He died in about an hour. I was so glad we could be with her, instead of her being alone with her daughter. It was the least we could do for our sister in Christ. We helped her get the ambulance to come and waited until they had taken Walter. Then, the Lord made a way for us to drive the Buick home. God is good!
Then, Dixie had to go to work today. A brother in Christ, Ken, who has a very well equipped truck took her to work for us, and it was a good thing. Some of the hills near the hospital were still pretty bad. He went back and brought her home this evening, too. What a family! God wants us to be there for each other, as much as possible. In fact, we are bound together even closer than usual when we can support each other in difficult times and as we minister for Christ in difficult situations.
My brother, Terry, changed his schedule, so he could go with me Friday to pick up a man who is getting out of prison. That is a blessing to me. We want to show him the love of Christ. Maybe, he will want to be a part of the family, as well. God wants the family to grow. His will is for all to come to repentance and faith in Christ. If we live like family should, I believe many more will come to Him.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 40-42.
