Excuses

This morning our men had a very good discussion of the Parable of the Great Supper in Luke 14:15-24. One of the things we focused upon was the excuses made by the ones who were invited to the supper. Excuses are very dangerous, and in this case they led to eternity in Hell.(v.24)

What is an excuse? It is our rationalization of a situation so we can feel good about doing what we want to do, instead of what God desires for us to do. An excuse always shows that self is in control, not the Holy Spirit. When we make excuses, we are saying to God that He is not really important to us. At times we try to convince ourselves that what we have is a reason and not an excuse. However, if we can't point to our reason in a clear Bible verse or principle, it is not a valid reason.

I have known so many people who will not go to church, and they will not consider Jesus, because they say that a Christian hurt them at one time or they have known hypocrites in the church. Now, tell me how smart is that excuse? A person is going to fail to trust God or even consider Jesus because of what someone else did? They will end up in Hell, and their excuse will be that the other human hurt them, so they rejected Eternal God.

I pray that we will not make excuses, so we can do our own will, but that we will seek the Lord fully and do whatever He says.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 11-13.
