Walking with God
My verse for today was Micah 6:8. It is a famous verse that speaks of walking humbly with God. What does it mean to walk with God?
Of course, God is not with us in a bodily form right now, so we can't literally walk along with Him. However, it is still a good concept. For two people to walk together they have to be going in the same direction at the same basic pace. In other words, they have to know where they are going, or one person is following the lead of the other person. That is how it is when we walk with God. He does not follow us wherever we go. God has nothing to do with sin, so if we go in that direction, He is no longer walking with us. If we desire to go our own way, He doesn't come along either. He is Lord, and we follow His lead. We are submissive to His will. We walk at His pace.
I think there is a common misconception of walking with God, because we talk about Jesus living in our hearts once we come to know Him. Yes, His presence is in us once we are saved. However, be careful not to mix the metaphors. Jesus is in us, but that does not have anything to do with walking with Him. Some people see Him as a good luck charm that they can take with them into unrighteous places and circumstances. That is a false view of God. To walk together we have to be "one accord" with Him. We must stay on the path He has set before us. We must turn away from what He rejects and turn toward what He embraces. It is a term of close fellowship. We can't be in fellowship with God and sin at the same time. When we get off track, we need to confess and repent, so we can get back with Him.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Nahum 2-3 and Habakkuk 1-2.
