Real Love
There are so many people who think love is a feeling. When we reduce love to a feeling, it is nothing more than infatuation. Once the feeling changes, they say that love is gone. Then, they believe they are free to go on to the next person for whom they have that "feeling." I hope we can all see the fallacy in that view of love. Love is much more than a feeling.
In fact, our greatest clue as to what love is comes from God. The Bible says that God is love. His basic nature or character is love. Therefore, to know what love is we need to look at God. How does God exhibit love? He reaches out to us to engage us in a relationship, even when we don't care about Him. Then, He came down to this earth in the person of Jesus Christ to die for us, since we could not forgive our own sin. He paid the price for our sin which was death, so we could have life. (Romans 6:23) Therefore He showed the greatest love that has ever been expressed.
From God's example we see that love is choosing to care for the other person for their sake, not for your own good. It is giving to the other person, not wanting anything in return. It is desiring the best for another. If we could truly love the Lord that way and each other that way, the world would be a totally different place. I pray that we will make that our goal.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 17-20.
