The DNA of a Church
I am not much of a scientist, but I think I understand DNA a little. Each cell of the body has to know what to do and how to do it, so the body can continue to grow in a healthy way. God created DNA as the genetic code for the cells to know these things. Therefore, the brain does not have to tell each cell what to do. It is programed into the cell by the DNA. The brain can go on to more important matters, while the cells go on reproducing and carrying on the functions of life.
That is really how it should be in the church. The DNA of the church should be the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. Each member should have the same basic DNA, so they know how to grow and to reproduce new Christians. It should even be programed in to start new churches. Just think of how that would change the church. If every Christian won at least two people to the Lord in his or her lifetime, and if each church started 2 new churches in its lifetime, it would not take long for the whole world to hear about Jesus.
What has gone wrong? The missional DNA is not there, so the cells or Christians go on without reproducing, so the church declines. Then, the churches fail to reproduce, so the number of churches declines. Therefore, the world fails to hear about Jesus. It is a tragedy that should never happen, and it would never happen if we could ensure that each believer had the missional DNA implanted in them.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Deuteronomy 23-25 and Mark 14:1-26.
