God is Near to the Broken Hearted
When we are broken hearted, it is such a great comfort to have others around us. We receive comfort just from their presence, even if there are not too many words spoken. It is not good for us to isolate ourselves from others when our heart is broken. We may be tempted to do that, but it won't help. It will only hurt. God knows all of this since He created us, so He knows just what to do.
David had experienced this condition, and he knew what God had done for Him. He knew that God would do the same for all who are broken hearted. (Psalm 34:18) David declared to us that God is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. I have found this to be very true. I pray we all have found this comfort.
Often, I have heard people say, "I don't know how I could handle this, if I didn't know the Lord." They said that because they knew that the Lord was near to them, walking with them each step of their journey, and they felt His love and assurance of His grace. That is how God expresses His love for us when we have a broken heart. He comes to be by our side to fill the void of our loss.
Also, God saves or delivers those who have a contrite spirit. Sometimes when we have a difficult time in our lives, we want to handle it ourselves. We just try to be strong on our own. That never works. God is waiting for us to admit our need. When we are contrite, we confess our shortcomings and our dependence on God. When He sees that contrition, He delivers us from the difficulty we are facing.
