Rejoice!
There are numerous commands in the Bible that tell us, as believers, that we are to rejoice in the Lord. This rejoicing is to be continuous, and it is to be from the heart. Therefore, if we are not rejoicing, we are sinning. I know that sounds very strong, but it is the truth, because we are disobeying these direct commands from God. Whatever God commands is always possible for us to do in His power as long as we are trusting Him.
David gave us one of these commands as he was being attacked by his enemies. (Psalm 5:11) He said, "But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy because You defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You." I would say that is a pretty clear command. What about you? So let me explain how this works.
When we put our trust in the Lord, He forgives our sins. We become a child of God. We have eternal salvation, and He walks with us every step of the way. He will never leave us or forsake us. All of those things and many other truths about knowing God should be the basis of our rejoicing every day. Also, we shout for joy, because we see Him defend us all of the time.
That is the heartfelt praise that bursts forth from our hearts being full of gratitude for His loving protection. Also, we rejoice and we are joyful all of the time, because we love the name of the Lord. The name of the Lord represents His character. When we love the Lord for who is, we have many reasons to rejoice in Him, because He is perfect in every facet of His being.
