Counteracting Evil

This world in which we live is filled with evil. It seems that it is getting worse and worse each year. We count on the police to stop the crime, but it is a losing battle. There is simply no way that a few policemen can enforce the laws and keep us safe from those who would do us harm and steal our possession. It needs to be a much larger group of people who work together to counteract the evil around us all.

When the king learned of Haman's plan to kill all of the Jews, he had Haman hung on the gallows made for Mordecai. Then, Esther knew there needed to be more done than that, so she went to the king again. (Esther 8:3) She spoke to the king, fell down at his feet, and implored him with tears to counteract the evil of Haman, the Agagite, and the scheme he had devised against the Jews. Her efforts were successful, and the plot was foiled by allowing all the Jews to fight back and protect themselves.

Today, we, as Christians, need to have a passion to counteract evil, like the passion Esther had to stop Haman's plan from being carried out.. We need to be personally involved in working with the authorities in our society to bring an end to evil, like abortion, human trafficking, and any exploitation of people who are vulnerable. We need to resist these things with tears because we are so touched by the plight of those who can't take care of themselves.

Christians are called to be the light and the salt in this world. If we do not shine the light of truth on the evils around us, who will? We are to be the salt of the earth, too. The salt is to preserve what is right, at the same time as counteracting the wrong things. The world needs to see that Jesus stands for justice and righteousness in this world of ours. Then, even if the evil gets worse, everyone will know that Christians care about those who are being harmed around us.
