Praying for Our Children

Children are a huge blessing. They are a heritage from the Lord. They are also a huge responsibility. We, as parents, are accountable to God for how we raise our children. However, it is such a great challenge to raise our children well that no one or no couple can do it well without the help of the Lord. That is why we must pray for our children.

Manoah was Samson's father, and when he found out that his wife had been visited by a man of God and told she would bear a son, Manoah prayed. (Judges 13:8) He prayed to the Lord that the man of God would return and teach them what they should do for their child who was to be born to them. That was the best thing Manoah could have done at that point.

Our prayers for our children should begin before they are ever conceived and born into this world. We should desire to have our children at the time the Lord directs. Then, we should pray for us to be prepared to lead them and teach them in word and in deed. We should pray for them constantly before and after their birth, for God to protect them and to speak to their hearts.

Of course, we should pray for our children to be saved by trusting Christ, and we should be the one to share the Lord Jesus with them in every way possible until they come to know the Lord. If they get away from the Lord after they get older, we should be diligent to pray against the spiritual forces that would destroy them, so they can come back to the Lord. Then, our prayers for our children should continue until the Lord takes us home. If we fail to pray for our children, we are failing in one of the worst ways possible.
