Speak Lord
As I talk with Christians, I often hear them say that they have a hard time knowing what God is saying to them. That seems so strange to me based on what the Bible says and my experience. God is not trying to hide His will, and He is able to speak to us very clearly. So what's the problem? I believe the problem is that most believers don't know how to listen for the Lord to speak, or they just don't even try.
Eli knew just what to tell young Samuel about hearing God speak to him. (I Samuel 3:9) He told Samuel to go lie down in his bed, and if the Lord called out to him, he should say, "Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears." So that is what Samuel did, and he heard from the Lord clearly. We can learn a lot from this verse.
We must not doubt that God speaks to His children. Jesus assured us that His sheep know His voice and follow Him. (John 10) We have the Holy Spirit in us, and He communicates directly to our heart most of the time, even though it can be an audible voice when necessary. We must stay ready to hear from the Lord 24 hours a day, and we must expect Him to speak. The more we listen the more we will hear.
Also, our heart condition is a key factor. We need a soft heart that is willing to do whatever God says to us. After all, He is the Lord, and we are His servants. We don't order Him around, but we assure Him that we are ready to do whatever He tells us to do. God loves to see that in our heart. He can really communicate well when we have a servant's heart. I pray we will all say to God, "Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears."
