Blood Atonement

When it comes to being right with the Lord we can't accomplish that on our own. We can't do enough good works to have our sins forgiven. We can't be good enough to be accepted by God, since we have all sinned, and one sin keeps us separated from God. Therefore, we have to follow the Lord's directions to be made right with Him. That is the only way.

In the Old Covenant there was a sacrificial system that God instituted, so that the people could be made right with Him. It involved animal sacrifices with the shedding of blood. (Leviticus 8:18,18,34) They were to take a ram for a burnt offering. Aaron and his sons were instructed to to lay their on the ram. Then, Moses killed the ram, taking the blood and sprinkling it around the altar. This was done to make atonement for them. There is much we can learn from this.

When we are made right with the Lord, we have to realize the seriousness of our sins. Just like having to lay their hands on a ram as it was killed, they had to realize that their sins caused the death of the animal. Then, the blood was sprinkled around the altar before the Lord as the payment for their sins. There is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood. That is God's way. Once that was done, atonement was completed, and they were at-one with God.

The same is very true with Jesus Christ and His blood shed for us. He was the Perfect sacrifice for all of the sins of the world. Each of us must go to Him in faith, turning from our sins, because we realize it was for our sins Jesus had to die and shed His blood. Once we trust Him as Savior and Lord, The at-one-ment is complete, and we are forgiven of our sins forever. We are adopted into God's family, and we have a relationship with God forever.
