Being Lax in Our Work
We all have to work in some way to support ourselves. Most people are not self-employed. We have to work for a company. We get paid based on the worth of our work for the company. Actually, this is even true for those who are self-employed. If we are lax in our work, it hurts the company or we are hurting ourselves.
The Lord wants to make us aware of how serious it is to be lax in our work. (Proverbs 18:9) God has told us that he who is lax in his work is brother to him who destroys. I am not sure that we really have that perspective on our work, but we should. Most of us would not like to be one who destroys, but we might be, if we do not heed what God is saying to us.
God made us to work. That was one of His first commands to Adam in the Garden of Eden. God knows that work is good for us. We learn from our work, and we produce good in one way or another. God has a plan for each of us to follow in our lives, and that plan includes our work. God is watching to see if we do our best, or if we are lax in our work.
If we are not doing our best in our work, we are cheating our employer. That is destroying the trust we should have with them. If we are not working hard, we might not make as much money, so we will come up short on what we need to live. However, the biggest problem with not being diligent in our work is that God is not pleased with us, and He considers us to be like someone who is destroying things, instead of building them up. We will have to give an account of that to Him when we stand before Him.
