Redeemed
There are several words that we use to show that we are right with God and our sins have been forgiven. Sometimes we say that we are "saved." That means we have been delivered from the effects of sin. We also say that we are "born again." That phrase means that our old person has died, and we are a new creation in Christ by grace through faith. Then, there is the word "redeemed." It has a special meaning for us.
When Elihu began to address Job after his three friends had finished speaking, he used this picture of what happens to us when we really get right with the Lord. (Job 33:28) He said that the Lord has redeemed our soul from going to the pit, and that now we will see the light. We need to dive into this concept of redemption as it relates to us and our relationship with God.
We have all sinned, and our sins have cut us off from God. The wages we get paid for those sins is death, separation from God forever in hell. We can't pay our sin debt, but Jesus paid it for us by shedding His precious, sinless blood. Then, when we repent of our sins and trust Jesus as our Lord and Savior, that payment is applied to our debt freely. We are bought back from sin, and we belong to God.
We are redeemed from going to the pit, or hell. We are delivered from ever having to face the darkness and pain of that place. Instead, Jesus gives us eternal life, and with that life we will see the light. We will go to Heaven, the perfect place where He is the Light. In fact, there is no night there at all, because the Lamb who redeemed us is the light. How glorious! If you know Jesus, let's rejoice in that redemption today!
