The Salt of the Covenant

Most of us like to use salt to season our food for better taste. Before refrigeration and other methods of preserving food salt was used for that reason, too. It is very important for us to have enough salt in our diet to be healthy, while not having too much to cause us problems. Since salt is so common the Lord used it to drive home some spiritual principles to us.

When we read about the grain offerings, we are told about salt being used. (Leviticus 2:13) God commanded the sons of Israel that they were to season with salt every grain offering presented to the Lord. The purpose was so that the salt of the covenant would not be lacking from any offering. In fact, God directed them to use salt for all offerings.

Our covenant with God is our relationship with Him. We trust Him, and He saves us from our sins. That relationship is very satisfying to us. We enjoy the Lord, as He brings meaning and flavor to our lives. We must never forget the Lord and drift away, because our lives will become a drudgery, instead of having peace and joy.

Also, our covenant relationship with the Lord is eternal. Once we trust the Lord Jesus we have eternal life forever. God is the One who preserves us. We are not saved by works, but by grace. It is a gift from God, and He wants us to remember that He never takes back His gifts or fails to fulfill His promises. Also, He reminds us that we are the salt of the earth, so we are to show others their need for Jesus, too. We share with them what we have.
