Select Men
When I was a kid, we would choose two captains, and they would choose their team members for our game. It was always an honor to be selected first. It was a disgrace to be selected last. Most of the time, we knew who would be selected first and last because we knew their strengths and weaknesses in each sport.
The tribe of Asher was paid a huge compliment by the Lord. (I Chronicles 7:40) Each of the descendants of Asher in the genealogy was a head of their ancestral clan. In fact, all of them were "select men." They were known to be mighty warriors and outstanding leaders. In all there were 26,000 men available for military service in the tribe of Asher. What a great achievement!
If someone wrote the genealogy for our family, what would be said about our family members? If they were able to say something good, it would be an indication that our parents did a good job of raising us in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. If we failed to be noteworthy, it would denote a breakdown of the family in accomplishing its purpose.
It should be our goal to raise our children and grandchildren to be "mighty warriors" spiritually, so they know how to defeat Satan and His forces in God's power. Also, it would be great if the young men could be mighty military warriors, too. Then, it would be fantastic if all of the men and women were "outstanding leaders," so they would be making an impact on our world and not the world making an impact on them.
