God Revealing His Counsel
We can all know what God wants us to do, and we can have a clear view of what God is doing in the world. He doesn't try to hide His work from us or to make it hard to discern. God wants us, as Christians, to see the world through His eyes, and He wants us to know exactly what He wants us to do. He has a plan for this world and for us, and He wants us to see both. Amos told us how God does this. (Amos 3:7) The truth is that God does nothing without revealing His counsel to His servants the prophets. Then, the prophets deliver God's counsel to us. God has used this line of communication for over 4,000 years, and those who want to know His counsel have found it and acted on it.
A prophet is a person who speaks forth God's Word. That is what the word literally means. In the Old Testament times God inspired "The " prophets to speak forth His words and to write them down for us. He showed them what was about to happen then and much of what is still going to happen in this world. By reading the books of the Prophets in the Old Testament we can learn all of the relevant facts we need to know. Then, God inspired the writers of the New Testament to record His words for us by the leadership of the Holly Spirit. Now we have "prophets" who speak forth God's Word. These are people gifted by God's Holy Spirit to bring the message of God's Word clearly to us today. When we listen to God's prophets today, we learn God's counsel for our personal lives and for our times in which we live. This is why we must be diligent students of the Bible and be an active member of a church where we can hear the Word of God proclaimed accurately. Then, we take what God shows those prophets and "The" Prophets, and we are not left out of the loop on anything God wants us to know to be obedient children.
