Selfish Priorities
As Christians, we are to value what God values. We are to have His values. God's values are in line with His purpose to see everyone come to know Jesus, as Lord and Savior. God desires for us to do whatever we can to use the resources He gives us, time, talents, and money, to reach the world for Jesus. When we have selfish priorities and value our desires more than His, God is very displeased with us. That was the situation in the days of Haggai, the prophet. He was called by God to let His people know why things were not going well for the ones who had returned to Jerusalem. (Haggai 1:9) They were expecting a good income from their labors, but it always came to little. When they brought money home, He blew it away. He did this because His house, the Temple, was desolate, but each one of them had a nice home to which to run. This case gives us a spiritual principle for us, as believers, today.
God blesses His children when we use what He gives us for His honor and glory. God wants us to be a conduit through which He can pour His resources into this world, so all will come to know Him. He uses His church to be a light for His Good News for the world. Therefore, all Christians should be active in a church and be carrying out the ministries of the church as God has gifted them to do so. If we neglect the ministry of the church and put the priority on our own possessions and desires, God will not bless us. However, if we prayerfully and faithful use our time, talents, and money to build up the church, God is quick to bless us, so we can be used by Him more and more. I pray we will all take account of our values and priorities, so we can see if any selfishness has crept in, and it is keeping us from enjoying the favor of God on our lives.
