A Stronghold or an Enemy?
The Lord is good! He is holy and just. He has perfect knowledge of everyone and everything. He knows just how to handle each person in each situation of life. He can be whatever we need Him to be in each situation. It all depends on our heart. Nahum wrote about the destruction of Nineveh. He made this point completely clear. God is a Stronghold in the day of trouble for those who take refuge in Him. However, He comes with an overflowing flood against His enemies. He will make a complete end of them and He will pursue them into the darkness. What a stark contrast for us to see.
To whom do we run in our time of trouble? If our trust is in the Lord, we will run to Him. We will not wait to see if we can handle the trouble ourselves. We will realize our need for Him, and He will be our Stronghold, a fortress in which to rest and be safe from any harm. I pray that is what we do. However, if we are God's enemy, the opposite is true. He sees our heart. He knows our intent is to be against Him and to resist His truth. Therefore, He comes at us with an overflowing flood of power. Our whole life is destroyed. God is not afraid of us, at all. He even pursues us into darkness, if we try to hide from Him. This is why we must choose to submit to the Lord in faith and love, admitting our sins and weakness. We must not allow our proud heart to come against the Lord, like Nineveh did. If we do, it will lead to our end.
