A Physician for the Sick
Jesus came into this world for a very specific reason. All people sin, and we need salvation from our sins. Jesus came to pay for that salvation by shedding His blood for us, dying, and rising again. Without Jesus' death and resurrection, we would be lost forever and without hope. However, when Jesus came into the world, He was roundly criticized by the religious leaders for having fellowship with sinners. They did not have compassion for "those people," and they thought they were unclean. Jesus told them very plainly that He did not come for those who are well. (Luke 5:31-32) It is not those who are well that need a physician, but those who are sick. Jesus came to call sinner to repentance. He was a Physician for the sick, and we should be that, too.
The longer we have been a Christian, usually the fewer non-Christians we know. We tend to hang out with our church family. We have fellowship with people in our family and friends who have similar beliefs to ours. I believe this is an unhealthy practice. It is not that we do not need fellowship with believers. We do. However, the sick people around us need to learn about the Physician and how He will save them by grace through faith. If we stay away from them, like the Pharisees of Jesus' day, they will never hear the good news. They will never be healed from their sickness. They will die in their sins. Let's be like Jesus. Lets' set aside time to relate to those who need the Lord, show them how much we care, and show them that Jesus died so they can have life in Him.
