Cry Out to the Lord
There are times when our only hope is the intervention of God. We may be in one of those times now. Our world is in such turmoil. Our country is in chaos in many ways. Most people are very far from God. It is hard to tell what the outcome of all of these things will be, but it doesn't look good. What should we do? I believe we should do what Joel, the Prophet, advised Israel to do, when God was so angry with them that He sent a terrible plague of locusts on the land. (Joel 1:14) Joel told the people of God to consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, and to call for the elders with all the inhabitants of the land to come to the Lord's house and cry out to the Lord. I believe he knew just how to get God's attention, and we need to listen to His admonition today.
Fasting is our way to show God how serious we are about needing Him to do something. This is especially true when a whole group of people or a whole country consecrate a period of time for a fast. When there is unity in our hearts, and we fast together, God listens intently. Also, when we call for a solemn assembly, God hears. This is a set time to come and confess sins to the Lord as a group. It is to show God we know we have sinned, and it is our sins that have brought His wrath on our land. If the elders and the people will do this, as we cry out to the Lord, I believe we will see God act. However, for this to happen we must shed the apathy and complacency that is common among God's people. We must have an urgency for God to intervene. Then, we must cry out to the Lord together. I pray all God's people will have hearts to do just this before all is lost.
