Obeying People but Not God
It seems a lot of people listen to their parents or their friends and take their advice on a wide range of life issues. This is true even though the people they obey are not experts or infallible in their wisdom. It seems to have to do with relationships and to whom we grant authority. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why we do this and whom we choose to obey. However, when it comes to obeying God, many people have a problem. Jeremiah told us an example of this. (Jeremiah 35:16) The Rechabites obeyed their ancestor Rechab, so they would not drink wine, grow crops, or live in houses, no matter what others said to them. At the same time the people of Israel would not obey God, even though he taught them many things. Does that make any sense? I don't think so.
God is all-wise. He has all knowledge. Also, He loves us all perfectly. Therefore, when God's Word, the Bible gives us instructions, we should obey them, no matter what people say or do. Just think of the insult it is to God for us to obey fallible people and not Him. Let's not do that to the Lord. Let's decide that we will obey God above all people. This is a great compliment to Him and it shows our personal faith in Him. In fact, it is just the smart thing to do, if we think about.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 37-40.
