Be a Blessing and Get a Blessing
Some people are just a blessing to be around. It is a delight to be with them, and it is easy to be a blessing to them. Others make it very difficult to be around them and to enjoy their company. We usually have a hard time blessing those people. Peter makes this point well in his first letter. (I Peter 3:8,9) He explained why this happens, too. I pray we will all hear what the Lord is saying to us, so we can be a blessing and get a blessing.
There are certain character qualities that we need to cultivate in order to be a blessing. We must be a person who is agreeable. Not that we agree with everyone all of the time, but in general, we agree as much as possible and we disagree in a nice way. We must be sympathetic, so that people know we care about them and their hurts. Of course, we must be loving and compassionate, caring about others before we care about our own needs. Then, we must be humble, which is not thinking too highly of ourselves, but giving God the credit for who we are and what we can do. If we will do these things, we will be a blessing and people will bless us. However, there are some things we must avoid, too. We must not be a person who retaliates against others, and we must not use sharp-tongued sarcasm to cut others down. Those things do not bless others, they tear them down. If we do those things, we will not be a blessing or get a blessing from others.
