Servant Leadership

When Solomon died, his son, Rehoboam, became the king. He had no experience in leading the people, so when the people came asking him how he would rule them, he asked his father's advisers what to tell them. They told him that he should be a servant to the people, be considerate of their needs, respond with compassion, and work things out with them, If he would lead in that way, the people would end up doing anything for him. (I Kings 12:6,7) This is a great leadership lesson for all of us, since we all lead someone in some way. Unfortunately, Rehoboam did not take this advice, but I hope we will.

God never wants us, as leaders, to be tyrants who lord over the people. God wants us to be servant leaders. Just think of how Jesus led His disciples and the people. He came to serve, not to order them around. (Mark 10:45) We should always be considerate of the needs of the people we lead. In fact, if we meet their needs, they will be set free to serve more themselves. We should always respond with compassion. That means to feel their pain and hurts, so we respond in a caring way, not harshly. We should always work things out with people, so we we do not hold grudges or cause hard feelings. We should be at peace with all people, as much as we can on our end of things. If we will do that well, people will not only follow our leadership, but they will do anything they can for us. That is a huge blessing for any leader and any people.
