A God-Listening Heart
Solomon was still a fairly young man when he became king of Israel. He was living a life faithful to God, except that he worshiped at local shrines, instead of just worshiping at Jerusalem with the Chest of God. One night when he was at the main shrine, God appeared to him in a dream and asked him what he wanted God to give him. Solomon answered God with a wonderful request that pleased God very much. He asked for a "God-listening heart." That way he could know how to lead the people of God, knowing good and evil. He realized even then that he could not do it on his own. (I Kings 3:9) God was so pleased that He gave Solomon more wisdom than any other man ever had. I believe that could be said for all of us. None of us can live our lives well on our own, we really need to hear from God.
God is the Creator of the universe. He created it and established it out of His wisdom and perfect understanding. That is why we can be sure all wisdom, all true wisdom, comes from God. If we ever hear a human being claiming to have wisdom, but that wisdom goes against God's character and His Word, that is not true wisdom. It is the wisdom of this world. We must stay away from the wisdom of this world. The way we can do that is to have a God-listening heart. If our mind and heart are focused in on hearing God every day, in every matter, then, we will not be influenced by the thinking of this world. In fact, when we encounter it, we will know it, because we know what is good and evil. Therefore, each of us needs to trust in the Lord Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior first. Then, we need to pray each day for God to give us a heart that listens to Him, so we can know the right way to go and decide to go that way. If we will do these two things, life will be so much simpler with much less confusion and distress in our hearts.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 6-8.
