Everything Comes From God
It is easy for us to take ownership for what we have and take credit for earning it by our own ability. Both of these positions are false. Everything we have comes from God. David affirms this truth very eloquently after he and the people gave a huge offering of gold, silver, and precious jewels for the building of the Temple. (I Chronicles 29:14) David was so humble in his declaration, and we should be humbled, too, when we realize this Biblical truth. Let's take time to sink our teeth into this.
As the worship song we sing affirms, "It's Your breath in our lungs." Yes, God is the Giver and Sustainer of life. We are only able to live because He created Adam and Eve, designing their bodies to pass on the life God had given to them. Then, God gives us all of the food and water we need to be healthy. He gives us the energy to work and to produce wealth. That is not to even speak of the intellect and physical strength we need to live and prosper. When we see a profit from our labors, we receive from His hand what He created in the first place, so it belongs to Him, and He is simply allowing us to use it for His glory. Therefore, as David knew, when we give to the Lord, we are not adding anything to Him. We are returning to Him what is His. That is why we need to listen to God and give back to Him just what He says or else we are robbing from Him. When we know this, we are humbled, and we come to understand His great love for us and for all of the creatures of the world, that He would give us so much. What a wonderful God we serve! It is a privilege to give to Him all we have for Him to use for His glory and the building of His kingdom.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 2-4.
