Set Free by the Word
John records a lot of the teaching which Jesus was doing among the multitudes. Many of the people did not grasp what He was saying, because they did not believe He had come from the Father in heaven. However, eventually there was a large group who said they believed in Him. Jesus them told them something we all need to hear. He said that those who are really His disciples continue in His Word. Then, they know the truth, and the truth will set them free. (John 8:31,32) Are you a slave today, or are you free from the bondage of sin's power?
When we come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, we will continue in His word. Remember what John called Jesus in John 1:1? Jesus is the Word. Therefore, when we really put our trust in Him, we are trusting the very Word of God who came down to reveal the Father to us and bring us salvation. We are saved from our sins and set free from the power of sin when we come to know Him. However, we also have the Word of God, the Bible. Anyone who knows the Word will continue in the Word of God, too. Then, we will know the Truth, Jesus, but we will also learn the truth from the Bible and be able to put it into practice. As we are able to do that, we are set free from many sins, so they have no more power over us. When the Son sets us free, we are free indeed. (John 8:36) The more we know and do the Word of God, the more free from sin we become, too. That is the Lord's will for everyone who is really His disciple. I pray that we are all really free today.
