The Impact of Proper Priorities

Haggai was a prophet in Jerusalem after the people returned from exile to rebuild the temple. God blessed them with everything needed to do the work, but they put their own desires ahead of the Lord and His house. They were living in paneled homes, which were very nice, but God's house was in ruins. That was the reason they were not seeing any material blessings. They lacked enough to food to eat, beverages to drink, and clothes to wear. The one who earned wages saw them disappear quickly, like they were put in a bag with holes in it. (Haggai 1:4,6) I wonder how many of us are experiencing this impact on our lives? We need to stop and consider our priorities to see if they line up with what is important to God.

God is the Lord of all. He is more important than anyone or anything else in the universe. He deserves to be our top priority. We should put doing His work ahead of doing what we want to do. His work is always fulfilling for us, when we do it out of love for Him. God is pleased with us when He sees that our hearts are set on Him, so that we put a priority on Him and His work. When we do that, He blesses us in many ways, even materially, because He knows we will use what He gives us in the right ways. (Proverbs 3:5-10; Malachi 3:8-11) Our priorities matter to God. Let's make sure His priorities are our priorities.
