Wisdom and Understanding
Usually, when we think of wisdom, we think of Solomon and the book of Proverbs. In fact, I would greatly encourage all of us to read that book and to soak in the wisdom of God from the wisest man who every lived. However, the book of Job also contains an extended passage on wisdom in chapter 28. Then, to conclude the discourse, we see a definition of wisdom and understanding. (Job 28:28) I believe we need to be reminded of what the Lord said during the time of Job.
Wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Why is that true? Wisdom only comes from the Lord. No person can gain wisdom without asking God to impart it to him or her. If we do not fear the Lord, we will not submit fully to what He teaches us, so we will not learn His wisdom. Also, it is wise to fear the Lord in the sense of being in awe of Him and fully respecting His power. Remember, He could wipe us out at any time, if we fail to fear Him, and we rebel against Him. Also, understanding is to turn from evil. We know we truly understand the Lord and His wisdom, when we decide to turn from evil and turn to the Lord fully. We cannot play with evil. The wages of sin is death. (Romans 3:23) We repent of our sins to trust Jesus and to be saved from our sins. Then, we continue to turn from evil, so we can walk with the Lord in a close personal relationship. Sin blocks salvation and holiness, unless we turn from evil and turn to the Lord. That is understanding the reality of our sinful, fallen world. I pray that we all have both wisdom and understanding.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 31-33.
