When God Speaks
Many people have a hard time believing that God speaks to us, but He does. I think most people miss His voice because they do not believe in Him, and they do not even believe that He exists, so they hear Him, but they think it is something else going on. Also, I think when He speaks the attitude of our heart has a lot to do with what we hear and what He says to us. (I Samuel 3:10) The experience of young Samuel gives us important insights into how God speaks and what to do when He does.
God does not speak in an unclear way. In fact, often He calls us by name, like He did Samuel. Yes, He knows our name, and He knows everything else about us, too. Therefore, when we feel like someone is speaking directly to us, or we hear someone calling us by name, we should be quiet and listen. It is very likely the Lord Himself trying to get through to us. Then, what we do next is crucial. We must humbly ask Him to speak, and we should tell Him we are His servant. We are ready to do what He says to us. God will not speak very often when we do not have a heart to obey. He would be wasting His breath. However, when we are ready to hear and to obey, He loves to communicate with us. I would challenge all of us to adopt the same attitude that Samuel had learned from Eli. Then, let's see what God says to us and do it.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 4-6.
