Don't Be Silent
It seems that most of the 10 Commandments and several other commands of God are broken in the final chapters of the book of Judges. The worst part about it was that the people were so far from the Lord that they thought everything they were doing was fine. The culture declined to an alarming point before it got better, and they returned to the Lord. I believe we see the same thing happening in America today. All around us we see things are happening which only a few years ago would have been unthinkable for most people. What are we, as believers, to do? (Judges 19:30) One thing is for certain; we must not remain silent.
The author of the book of Judges gives us an admonition in this verse. It is a wise course for us when we find ourselves in this cultural situation. We should start by considering all that we see and hear. Do not just ignore the decline and the sinful practices. Then, take counsel from God's Word and from godly counselors, so that our response is Biblical and compassionate. Once we have a clear understanding of what is happening and what the Lord thinks about it, we must speak. It is a sin to keep silent while those around us lose their way and get so far from the Lord that they do not know what is right or wrong. Our words may be the only truth they hear, and the Holy Spirit can take that truth to bring conviction and salvation, if we will allow ourselves to be used by God.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Judges 20-21 and Ruth 1.
